Instructor Silvia

Hi my name is Silvia, I am a newly certified Swim Babies Swim Instructor, but I’m not new to swimming. I have been a swimmer all of my life – I love the water! I was raised near the ocean in my native country of Colombia and participated in my city’s swim team while growing up. I graduated with a B.S. in education from the Universidad Pedagogica and earned a Montessori Teacher’s Diploma from ICEPRE in Bogota, Colombia. After leaving Colombia I went to live in Belgium where I studied French as well as special education for mentally and developmentally disabled children. As a result of my time there I speak French fluently as well as Spanish and English.

I am now married and a mom to two boys; they too have inherited my love of the water. Both boys are active members of our local swim team.

In addition to my Swim Babies Swim Certification, I am also CPR certified by the American Red Cross as well as Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard certified. I have a certification from the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America as an Aqua Fitness Instructor and by the Arthritis Foundation to teach their water fitness program.

I truly enjoy working with babies and young children, especially those with special needs. Having a sibling with Down’s syndrome, and teaching special education to developmentally and mentally disabled children, I decided to use this knowledge in the aquatic environment and acquired an Adaptive Aquatics certification from the Dan Marino Center. I have learned over the years; the skills, patience and knowledge it takes to work with mentally and physically challenged children. I believe it is imperative these children are given aquatic survival skills at an early age as they are more at risk, having a natural curiosity towards water.

As a triathlete myself, I recognize and appreciate the importance of having a coach to guide one’s progress. I coach my students on how best to become proficient in their swimming skills, so that they know how to be safe while enjoying the water – a skill they will need for the rest of their lives!
